Good Morning, Japan!
Today, our adventure brought us to Sasebo, a picturesque port city in Nagasaki Prefecture, Kyushu. From the moment Norwegian Spirit docked at the Sasebo International Terminal, we were captivated by the breathtaking landscapes—lush green islands scattered across the shimmering waters. It felt like stepping into a postcard.
Let’s dive into what makes Sasebo a must-visit destination, the highlights of our day, and some tips to make your visit seamless!
About Sasebo
Sasebo, nestled in southern Japan, offers a mix of natural beauty, naval history, and unique cultural experiences. Famous for the iconic Sasebo Burger—a Japanese twist on the classic American burger introduced by the U.S. Navy—the city also boasts fresh seafood, particularly oysters and shellfish.
For cruisers, the Sasebo International Terminal is centrally located, providing easy access to major attractions like downtown Sasebo and the Kujukushima (99 Islands). Depending on your cruise itinerary, your ship may dock in nearby Nagasaki instead, so double-check your port in advance!

Highlights of Our Day in Sasebo
-
Kujukushima Aquarium Umi Kirara
Located within the Kujukushima Pearl Sea Resort, this aquarium showcases the marine life of the Kujukushima area in Saikai National Park. With over 370 species, including dolphins, jellyfish, and tropical fish, it’s an educational and fun stop for kids and adults alike. Our children were thrilled to see the diverse sea creatures up close!
-
Kujukushima Cruise (九十九島遊覧船)
The Kujukushima, or “99 Islands,” actually consists of 208 stunning islands, only four of which are inhabited. These islands served as the backdrop for the opening scene of The Last Samurai. We hopped on a cruise departing from Pearl Sea Resort and soaked in the serene beauty of these islands. TIP: Visit the aquarium first to get a discount on the Kujukushima cruise tickets!
-
Sasebo Gobangai Mall
A short 15-minute walk from the cruise terminal, this waterfront mall features 73 shops offering imported brands, local specialties, and gourmet items. While many visitors head straight to the Starbucks, we opted for a more unique experience at a local bookstore.
Why Sasebo Stands Out
From its natural beauty to its cultural charm, Sasebo is a destination that caters to a variety of interests. The juxtaposition of lush green islands against the deep blue sea is unforgettable. Adding to the magic was docking across from the U.S. Navy Base and hearing the National Anthem play—a special touch that made our kids feel the excitement of the day ahead.
